Case Studies

Andrew Porter Ltd, is an expanding Transport/Storage company based in the North West. The company was established in 1979 by Andrew Porter and has continued to expand each year since. The company were looking for someone to take over IT support, since the growth of the company was taking its toll on the computer systems, and a requirement for external specialist support had been identified. The manager responsible for IT 'Gill Aspey' contacted Fairhurst IT Solutions to investigate and identify what was required to bring the systems up to a reasonable specification.

The investigation showed the server to be the centre of the problem. The Hard drive was full and the processor and memory could hardly cope with demands made on them. A requirement for both internal and external emails was identified as only certain staff had access to external email facilities and no internal facility was available. A number of workstations were showing signs of age and were only just able to run some software packages.

The option of upgrading the server was immediately dismissed since it would have required that nearly all components be replaced, so a new server was purchased. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server was installed onto the server along with Microsoft Exchange Server to handle the new email service. Due to the location of the business an ADSL connection was not possible so an ISDN line was put in to give access to internet and emails. Once windows had been reinstalled, thus removing some old and redundant software, the work stations that were struggling were found to be adequate thus extending their working life.

A cost effective solution resulting in a satisfied client.
